Now the SXSW dust has settled, Foursquare are claiming over 600,000 users - with 75,000 of these added during the festival. Gowalla is being more tight-lipped about their user numbers, preferring to focus on the 135,000 check-ins across the Austin, TX area during SXSW.
But while the ‘who’s got the biggest base?’ fight was rumbling in Texas, the Monopoly-like app MyTown was quietly beating both contenders with over 1.5million users - tripling in size since Jan 2010 and gaining 130,000 new users a week.
And then in the ‘almost too big to care’ category, along comes Loopt with over 3million users - five times the size of the more headline-grabbing Foursquare….
